Recommended food and drink...
The Crown Hotel is just 2 minutes walk and offers excellent traditional pub grub and real ale: http://www.crown-hotel.co.uk/
The Game Cock Inn Austwick a short drive from the cottage, or day walk (see below) The food here is really exceptional, a great selection of ales, dog friendly in the bar and the coffee simply outstanding. http://www.gamecockinn.co.uk/

Walking/cycling from the door...
Horton Scar House allows the keen walker to enjoy a different route every day from the front door, there are walks suitable to all fitness and agility levels. For the fully able bodied there is a circular walk up and over Pen y Ghent via a scramble up its craggy face. For less able there are many gentle walks that one can make, a particularly pleasant one is t walk by the river Ribble. With Horton in Ribblesdale having its own railway station one can take the train to Ribblehead Station and walk back. And of course there is the Three Peaks Challenge, to walk Pen y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough all in 12 hours or less... the starting point is the sadly closed currently Pen y Ghent cafe over the road. For us personally we would recommend doing the Three Peaks individually over 2/3 relaxing days.
A super day long walk that we like to do is from the cottage, along the bank of the river Ribble to Helwith Bridge, then onto Austwick and lunch at the superb Game Cock Inn (dogs are allowed in the bar area too) After lunch then we head up onto the the high ground (Norber) and across the access land to Thieves Moss, breathtaking views here then back into Horton via Sulber Nick, around a 13 mile circuit.
There are some great mountain biking routes from the village and many more close by.

Photography...
If you enjoy landscape photography then you will not be disappointed, there are many beautiful places in the UK but this area of the Yorkshire Dales offers a unique landscape beautiful and rugged. The limestone pavements and scars are a photographers heaven.
The picture here is of Horton Scar which is just a short walk up the Pennine Way from the house.

Settle...
Just 10 minutes away by car (train and bus services too) is the delightful town of Settle. Here you will find plenty of local shops and in addition a Booths supermarket for all your needs. For a good coffee we recommend the Kitchen Cafe with is above the car and Kitchen shop. Our guests have reported that fish and chips from the Fisherman in Settle are excellent.
